Fun Facts

Here are a couple fun facts for today.
Puppies learn best through Play.
Play helps increase their neurological development and improves social skills.
It also helps them develop impulse control

If you only train your dog when he is calm he wont know how to obey you when he is excited!

Makes sense doesnt it.

House Training Puppies The Keys To Success

By Ben Sinclair

As a puppy owner one of your most important tasks is to teach your puppy not to use the home as a toilet. And believe me, house training puppies can be quite a challenge. Here are the keys to success.

Accept that owning a puppy is a major responsibility. Yes, they are cute and cuddly and fun to play with but you have to be a teacher too.

It takes time, patience and a consistent approach to potty train a child. Well, the same holds true when it comes to puppy toilet training. This is especially true for younger puppies as they will not have control of their urinary and bowel functions.

Your puppy should have its own personal space. The crate, also known as a cage, kennel or den, must be big enough for the puppy to easily stand up and turn around in. I hate the word cage as it makes it sound like a punishment cell and that is most definitely not its purpose. A puppy should be able to go to its crate whenever it wants during the day.

You have to consciously watch your puppy to learn its body language. This will give you clues as to when it needs to go to the toilet.

You have to praise your puppy every time it does the toilet outside. The tone of your voice should be really enthusiastic but keep it soft not loud.

But the top key to house training puppies is ROUTINE. That means within a 5-15 minute window the following happens at the same time EVERY day

* taken outside first thing in the morning;
* feeding time;
* taken outside 10-20 minutes after eating; and
* taken out last thing at night before bedtime.

Make sure you get puppy toilet training right. It is essential to a strong, happy relationship between you and your dog.

Discover the easiest and most reliable method for house training puppies. Whatever the age. Whatever the breed.

Disapointment whilst watching Dollhouse

Ok so I love all things Joss Whedon. Firefly is amazing, as is Dr Horribles Sing Along Blog. I am even enjoying Dollhouse. BUT why why why!!! When one has a plot about a woman who loves horses you would think that you would research a little about horses.

I mean we are talking things that any woman who was a horse loving girl would know.

First off the horse that is the clients favorite is not a fancy horse. Just a nice solid plan horse. This is NOT a race horse! As well a person doesnt ride around on their race horse. Race horses careers are pretty much over by the time they are 4. Their lives are regimented and they live on the track. This horse is muscled as a riding horse NOT a race horse. This horse moves like a cross between a constipated pony and a pile driver.

As well the horse goes like crap when being ridden, it goes totally inverted... a no no, regardless of what style of riding you do. A very expensive riding horse does not look like that horse, neither does an expensive race horse.

The riding level is extremely poor as well. Ok so a fair number of people with more money than ability ride horses. I have seen it often. But usually they dont ride like a sad sack of potatoes (ok so some are a little sack like... but I still argue that someone whos first love was their horses would not be into abusing their horses every ride) I felt so sorry for that poor horse in both scenes. Cantering a long like a good boy and getting the shit kicked out of his kidneys by poor riders repeatedly slamming on his back...

This totally ruined this episode for me. Its not because I am in the biz. This would have offended me when I was 12. Shame on you Mr Whedon

Alternative Pet Food

By Bill Carr

Should you be concerned about your dog or cats health these days? With all the dog and cat food companies that are recalling there food, for poisonings, you most likely should be. As a pet owner now there are limited products for your loved pets.

But there is a solution to this problem, why not cook or bake for your cats and dogs. At least you know what your putting in there pet food, and not to mention your cat and dog will enjoy there new found pet food much better than that old canned byproduct anyway.

With limited choices of what to feed your pets, more and more pet owners are feeding them table food and dinner scrapes. It is important to keep your pet healthy with a balanced meal, with the right nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and proteins for your type of cat or dog.

Its really not that hard to prepare meals and treats for your pets: There are many different recipes you can prepare for them that are healthy and good for them. Just put aside a little time each week to make your dog or cat treats, and you will be able to give them there treats for the week and the same goes for there meals, except you might have to prepare them a little more often, maybe two or three times a week just to keep it fresh. But you can prepare one batch for the whole week and freeze half of it in your freezer, provided you have the space, or if you have a kitchen vacuum sealer for moist food, dry food you can just save in a container.

HIRE OF DOG EXERCISE AREA

Filed under: General News — field of dreams @ 10:16 pm
PICTURE OF OUR EXERCISE FIELD
dog stuff 001

This is aimed at owners who would like their dogs to have a run off the lead in complete safe secure surroundings. People with many dogs often find it difficult to walk them altogether and with the bye-laws of only 4 dogs per person on the lead at any one time it can be a problem especially in public places. It is also useful for owners with dogs that have a poor re-call, they can have a good blast off the lead or on a training line if in use.
Dogs with issues can also come along, the owners feel completely at ease knowing that their dog can have a run without the risk of running into problems. Dogs with dog to dog aggression or people aggression are welcome but will only be booked in after answering a questionnaire so that they do not pose a risk to other dogs/people. This is purely for safety reasons.
All sessions are individual to each owner and not for multiple owners, however should you wish to have a group session then please ask for our group rates.
The field is adjacent to the training field which is in use the majority of the time.

Youll definitely want to visit my page, and "Like" me. I blog more on Facebook, than I do here. I like the ease at which I can...

Your dog should enjoy being trained

Properly training your dog will allow you to coexist with ease and become best pals. When your dog is well-trained, then both you and your dog will know exactly what is expected from each other. You will not have to worry about leaving him home along or taking him to public places. Though it might seem like a difficult task, you and your dog will have many rewarding times together, sharing the tricks and companionship that youve come to know through the dog training sessions.

Your dog should enjoy being trained by you. Keep in mind that your dog does not have an attention span that goes beyond fifteen minutes. Keep your rewards coming and vary what you give them. Your dog should enjoy lots of praise for a job well-done. Your dog will be more receptive if you make training time fun!

Stay consistent when you are trying to train your dog. Make sure everyone knows the right commands to give the dog; keep a list if necessary. Behavior should be rewarded or not depending on the affect that is being sought. Your dog will become very confused if each person responds differently to a single type of behavior. This will make training very hard.

If your dog has separation anxiety, its important that it learns to connect with more than one person. The dogs relationships to other people serve to dilute its unhealthy level of dependence and fixation on you that causes it so much grief.

Communication is one of the essential aspects of training your dog. Clear commands and consistency are necessary when you work with your dog. Your verbal commands and body language, along with the rewards you give out, should all be consistent. Pay attention to any cues that your dog gives you, as well. By watching and understanding the way your dog communicates, you can discover if your dog is getting fatigued, restless, or is happy.

Keep your dog outside while you are away from home to prevent it from chewing on your items. When this is not possible due to weather or living in an urban area, close your doors to all of your rooms. This keeps your dog out of your things. Be sure to leave chew toys out for them.

If your dog suffers from separation anxiety when youre away, encourage him to bond with other members of the household. This will help it be less focused on the fact that you are not home.

Be consistent with the words you use when trying to teach your dog a new behavior. This causes a strong association between a word and an action in your dogs mind. It is essential not to confuse your dog with commands that are not the same every single time. Your success rate in training your pet will be higher if you follow these guidelines.

Once you decide to train your dog, it is very important that you continue with the training no matter what. Without reinforcement, your dog will revert to his old behaviors. You always need to keep training your dog, just like you need to continue feeding it and providing it shelter.

Introductions to new dogs or any other animals should occur slowly and carefully. Consider your pet at home before adopting a new one. In order to maximize bonding, a new pet will need a personality which complements the personality of the pet you already have.

Ensure that your dog understands the rules. This means everyone living in the house needs to enforce the boundaries you set. This will quickly undo all of your hard work and training.

Its a good idea to keep in mind the number of treats you are giving your dog throughout the day. Giving him too many will add unneeded calories to his diet and cause him to become overweight. Many people overlook treats when considering the animals diet, but they certainly add up, especially during active training.

Limit the duration of training sessions. Your dog is going to get bored doing the same thing over and over. Try to limit initial training sessions to 10 minutes or less.

Obedience classes can help you with any training issues you face. These classes can help deal with various issues such as stopping disruptive barking, not sitting when told, and not listening to you.

It is vitally important that your dog is treated in the same manner, given the same commands and rewarded similarly by every member of your family. This is the only way to ensure the training sticks. Consistency is the best method for training a dog. If you train your dog in a certain way while another family member encourages a different behavior, your dog will not know what to do.

Be sure to have your dog spayed or neutered at six months. You should do this at the same time you first take the dog to obedience training. A dog that has been spayed or neutered will be a more obedient dog. By spaying or neutering a dog he will have a longer happier life.

Dont let your dog take the lead in a training session, or in life. . Dont ever give your dog a command if you are unable to follow through with the enforcement of it.

To help you train your dog you should know what kinds of foods your dog likes to eat. Since these will be the rewards for good behavior when you are training the dog, it should be something that really motivates him. Make note of your dogs reaction when the reward is offered.

Although a harness is more comfortable for dogs, it does not offer as much control as a cinch-type collar. Keep your dog on his harness, but also use your cinching collar. Tug on his collar when its absolutely necessary, and your dog will soon learn how to obey wearing the harness alone.

You can prevent your dog from destroying your home by keeping it outdoors when you are away from the house. When this isnt possible, you want to provide things that both appeal to your dog and that are okay for the dog to chew on. Establishing acceptable chews toys is also about keeping those things you do not want your dog to chew up behind closed doors or well out out of reach.

As this article has demonstrated, dog training is a very wise use of your time and energy. A badly behaved dog can destroy your house and stress everyone in the family; soon no one will want him around. By applying the information found in this article, youll be making a wise choice and helping your dog to be an enjoyable member of your family..

Coco Mulch

It never hurts to post this info again!

Warning To Pet Owners !!

WARNING! Please inform every dog or cat owner. This is serious!?

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you dont have a pet, please pass this to those who do.

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) dcided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasnt acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk . Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the companys website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hersheys, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs wont eat it."

*Snopes site gives the following information:

http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foremans Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called Theobromine . It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or bakers chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine..

**PLEASE PASS THIS ON**

Featured Toy of the month

Spike with his new Kong Wubba toy

This month I am very proud to say I will be spotlighting a wonderful toy from THE KONG COMPANY. It was my pleasure to talk to Mark Hines from the Kong Company and discuss my plans for featuring toys from The Kong Company. As we spoke it came to my attention that I would be spotlighting The Kong Company and its products for many months because of the many useful toys they offer. Most of you are familiar with the KONG, so I am going to begin by spotlighting a different toy. Read and enjoy!!

Kong Wubba (catchy name)

This wonderful toy has quickly become one of Spikes favorites! As you can see by the above picture he has a great time with it.

The Wubba is a Kong shaped toy that is covered with durable fabric. The Wubba is NOT a Kong covered with Fabric, but rather a softer squeezable toy with a squeaker for lots of interactive fun. I love to use this toy when Spike and I go out for a game of fetch, I also use it for training purposes and when I take Spike into new environments (especially the vet).

The amazing properties of this toy make it very versatile. It squeaks so I can use the sound to get and keep attention. The Wubba has a nice long tail that I use to get the prey instinct going and get Spike even more interested in the toy. Once the instincts are going we can either have a game of tug or I can throw the Wubba for a wonderful game of fetch. The unique shape of the Wubba gives it an unpredictable bounce making it a challenging fetch toy for any dog.

Can you use it for training? Absolutely!! Pull out the Wubba instead of food treats when you are ready to teach your dog something new or reinforce already learned commands. Take it on walks with you for distraction, if your dog reacts to other dogs or you find keeping his attention difficult when out in the big world. As a distraction approaches begin by squeaking, then wave it in front of your dog, next tell him to sit then toss it to him and play a little tug. in the 10 seconds it took you to do this you now have your dogs undivided attention and the distraction passes.

The Wubba comes in various sizes ranging from puppy to extra large. Be sure to get the size best suited for your dog. This is not a chew toy and you should not leave it around for your dog to chew. If you use it as a play/training tool and put it away after each use your dog will be that much more excited when you pull it out the next time.

Go pick up a Kong Wubba today and enjoy some wonderful play times with your dog!!

For more toys visit the Kong Company web site at http://www.kongcompany.com/

Importance of Dog Training

Dog Training plays an important role in the life of dog and his owner as they both are bounded and committed to each other. It is the same happiness you feel when your kid goes to pre-school and learn many thing. So it is the moral responsibility of a owner to train his dog step by step according to his aspirations.

Stages of Dog Training

There are different stages involve in dog training which starts from very first month with puppy socialization training then comes to puppy first year training after that dog training followed by advance dog training.

Why Dog Owner Should Impart Dog Training To His Dog ?

If you really love your dog do take some time for him to impart dog training. Its just sparing some for dog training 5 to 10 min in the binging which gradually increase time to time and according to willingness and self schedule. Remember dog respect the trainer as he starts giving more importance to you this the thing I hear from my costumers who impart dog training by there self some share there bad experience when they send there dog out on training for a month or so I came to here that there dog does not get good diet as he is getting some says there dog get sick after that dog training etc. I want to tell you why it happens ? Suppose you send your Dog on a dog training program and u paid a good amount of money actually its not a fault of dog trainer as he had to train many dogs so they are always in hurry and your dog never get time to rest and practice as every thing go too fast this is my experience that I came to know may be its not true every one have his other way of thinking.

You may have a puppy right now who is starting to exhibit behavior due his breed which may or may not fit into your personality and lifestyle its up to you to try to train your pup so that he can fit into your world. Puppies first year is a video guide designed in five parts to help you to anticipate your puppys needs as he go thought critical stages in his first year of life. Its really important to get a control over your puppy otherwise your puppy dominate you.

Puppy Obedience Training

Dog are pet animals in a dogs some dogs are alpha dogs once the establish leadership then other dogs are obedient to him. My balanced, step by step training methods proven to help establish leadership. When i train a dog I like to have "Working Bond" And "Love Bond" this means I am establish a leader of the dog as also I lake the dog. I dont be too stick or too lenient. The mythology i used is as follows :- First Part of the training is Teaching ===> Next Part of training is testing ===> Final part is Consistency its foundation work as it derives good results. Its a visual obedience training that after 5 weeks you get the out standing results with your dog for sure. Now you may want to know why obedience training is more important before a professional dog training it is because you make a control over your dog and dog start realizing that he had to obey you in all scenes weather willingly or not thats why obedience dog training play an important role in dogs training program. You must give a proper obedience training so that it will be very easy for you to impart dog training without any conflict. Hope you got my point best of luck. Thanks

Professional Dog Training

Professional Dog Training contain all the information that you need to control your dog in any situation the quality of dog lies not only the efforts you put in working with him but also techniques applied. Dog training is not a so much matter of training a dog but training yourself to understand what it takes to be respected as a leader in your dog mind. A well trained dog is one who get more freedom, exercise and affection during his life because the owners are happy with him and can trust there dog will respond when absolutely necessary. A properly trained dog will be happier and help you through out your life. My methods will instruct you how to honest the dog. Every dog is much smarter then most of us had even realize the reason people think that there dog is not very smart is not that the dog is lacking intelligence but the dog does not have respect for the owner as its leader. This is why you can be calling your dog and instructing them through dog trainer and dog seem to disregard his owner. Cesar Milan Basset Hound

A Basset Hound doesnt like one owner. But, dog expert, Cesar Milan, gets the husband to admit that he doesnt like the dog. Now he can train the man how to ...

How To End Your Dogs Food Begging

Begging usually becomes a habit if you feed the dog from the table when he begs. He wont leave the table if hes reinforced for staying with tidbits. Command the dog to "settle" at the table and enforce it. Hell tire of staring up and will soon fall asleep if you dont reward him for begging. If you give the dog a scrap from the table, give it only when hes in a settle position.

Some dogs are just born optimistic, and even though they have never received food from the table, they plant themselves at the table, hoping something will fall their way. Dropped food is a good beggar reinforcement, especially if you have a child who likes to make a game of dropping food on purpose. You may choose to train the dog to settle or down-stay in another room or at a distance from the table.

The dog must never bite the hand that feeds. To make sure that he doesnt, teach him the command "easy." Offer him a treat by holding the treat in your thumb and index finger keeping your palm toward your body and your knuckles facing the dog. If the dog grabs for the treat, give him a very loud and firm command by saying "Easy". After a few rounds of this practice, he will generally take the food from your hand gently.

The German Shepherd or Alsatian Dog

By Edward Linton

The German Shepherd, also known as Alsatian, is a very intelligent dog with a very noble look, he has elegant flowing lines and intelligent expression. He is an active dog and an obedient worker. He has all the qualities to make him what is considered to be the ideal dog. He has a very good nature and is a natural sportsman, being nimble and fast he makes a fantastic pet or work dog. They enjoy being around people and other animals. German Shepherds are well suited to obedience training.

The Alsatian is most often black with tan but can also have variations of coat color including all black. There are three varieties of coat, rough coated (short), long rough coated and long haired.

As a working dog German Shepherds are suited to various jobs, some of the more obvious are police and guard dog, in this role they can be used to apprehend criminals, sniff out drugs and explosives and find lost people. They are also used by rescue associations to find people trapped in collapsed building or buried alive in disaster zones. German Shepherds can also be used as guide or help dogs due to their high level of intelligence they are ideally suited to the task.

In the case of the German Shepherd its history is not very old, in fact the dogs you see now have only been around since the end of the 19th century, which came about from a breeding amalgamation between various Shepherding dogs by Capt Max von Stephanitz who is classed the father of the breed.

There are lots of famous German Shepherds in the history vaults, this is due to the popularity of the breed and the versatile and intelligence of the animal. Some have even become movie stars such as The Littlest Hobo and Rin Tin Tin who made 26 movies and at his peak was receiving 10,000 fan letters a week. Others just have famous owners such as Clipper who was president Kennedy’s dog. Over the years German Shepherds have rescued and saved hundreds of lives either by being trained to or just because they love their owners.

The German Shepherd will live for approximately 10 to 12 years and will need lots of exercise, including a large play area or garden. You will have to give extensive training in the early years, but with its high ability to learn good training is essential. They will also shed hair all the time and seasonally it will shed heavily. Brushing twice weekly is recommended but if hair is a problem in the home daily brushing is recommended. Bathing should happen rarely and at the most only twice a year to avoid removal of essential skin oils. Watch out for hip problems as this is an area where German Shepherds are prone to having problems.

Above all if you decide to have a German Shepherd as a pet or working dog you will have a animal which is intelligent, loving, loyal and will give you lots of enjoyment.
